If the opening for registration of hundreds of new extensions can be traced back to at least 10 years ago, still today it is not possible to match the generic top level domain .music to the desired domain name.
However, although there is still no certain date, all the information running on the web agrees that for the release of the extension by ICANN, the body responsible for managing and coordinating the name system a domain, you won't have to wait much longer.
When will the .music domain be released?
With a note dated November 4, 2021, DotMusic Limited , the Cypriot company that manages the extension, announced that the first .music domain has landed on the Internet. It is, therefore, the milestone that marks the starting point of a new digital guise tailor-made for the musical community. The company is currently working closely with ICANN on the release of the extension, scheduled for later in 2022.
To date, however, the possibility of pre-registering a .music domain is guaranteed : in essence, we can speak of a sort of pre-emption right thanks to which interested parties can secure the desired domain name, and then proceed with its registration once ICANN effectively makes the extension usable.
Who is the .music extension aimed at?
As can be deduced, the domain will involve the international artistic community: singers, bands, record companies, musicians, music promoters, radio, realities that offer musical activities.
The intention of .music is to unite and protect the intellectual property of the music world, respecting the rights of artists, cultural diversity and promoting art. Not surprisingly, .music will be the first extension launched with tailored policies to protect authors' rights and ensure that artists, industry professionals and companies can claim their name without fear of falling into cybersquatting or being victims of piracy. Some of these policies foresee, for example, the verification of the registered domain name, which must necessarily be related to the name or trademark in question, and the control over the contents, to ensure the relevance of the web project with the musical context.
Alternatives to the .music domain
If you have the urgent need to give shape to your online presence and you can no longer postpone the creation of your website, you could orient the choice towards one of the extensions on the market closely linked to the .music domain.
