Linux Day 2022, the Italian event dedicated to Linux is back
After two years of pandemic and many organizational difficulties, Linux Day returns on Saturday 22 October 2022 . The event is of a national nature, although divided into various local events, and is aimed at promoting a wide How and why Linux Day is born
The event was born in 2001 from the idea of Davide Cerri and Antonio Gallo, with the aim of creating an event that would enhance the network of Italian LUG (Linux User Group), in order to raise awareness and develop this operating system and software , as well as making Italian computer enthusiasts aware of the potential and functionality of GNU / Linux.
The local organization is granted to the respective groups, in compliance with the general guidelines defined by ILS, the Italian Linux Society .
ILS is nothing more than an Italian association created to promote operating systems on Linux and on GNU tools. It is a non-profit organization, with the aim of generating a movement functional to the dissemination of open source software in Italy. From a purely organizational point of view, ILS is responsible for establishing the guidelines for Linux Days.
Founded in Savona in 1994, ILS is not the only one in Italy to promote free software, but it represents a point of reference for groups and enthusiasts of this field.
Linux Day: the purpose of the event
In addition to emphasizing the issues closest to the Linux operating system, the event does not define restricted content; in fact, the areas of interest are particularly wide and the activities foreseen by the local events are diversified.
It becomes complex to circumscribe the theme of Linux Day 2022, since it is “ undefined ”: therefore all applications related to free software and culture are accepted.
Precisely for this reason, it should be emphasized that Linux Day is not an event that involves the promotion of proprietary applications (even if they run on Linux) or in any case of themes opposed to the spirit of sharing and openness of the community. The talks and parallel sessions are aimed at spreading Linux to the curious, enthusiasts, professionals and volunteers in every part of Italy.
The most famous faces
Among the personalities that always arouse great curiosity is Mark Richard Shuttleworth, a South African entrepreneur who has contributed substantially to the development of Linux. Many enthusiasts will remember it for Ubuntu, a Linux distribution that is extremely easy to use and graphically better than other distributions available.
In addition to the founder of Ubuntu, over the years there have been interventions by prominent figures who have exhibited updates, projects, ideas that revolve around the operating system.
Target audience
The event, as mentioned, aims to promote the spread of GNU / Linux and free software. Precisely for this reason, Linux Day is mainly aimed at the general public, with broad-spectrum activities and talks aimed both at users with advanced knowledge and at those who are beginners and who want to deepen the technical aspects of free software.
Access to the event, according to the guidelines, must always be free and free in all its parts and moments and the various public interventions must be approved, in order to guarantee uniformity of the initiative.
In order for you to actively participate, as a developer or disseminator, it is important to communicate your program no later than one week before the event. The organization will evaluate the proposal and decide if it complies with the themes of the event.
